Nucchu – Nucchakki in kannada or Beaten Rice upma is very tasty. It is easy to prepare unlike rava upma. It is one of Karnataka special authentic dish. Nucchakki/Broken Rice is easily available in all provision stores or rice shops.

Ingredients :
Nucchakki/Broken Rice 2 cup
Onion 2-3
Green chillies 3-4
Curd Chillies 4-5
Mustard ½ tsp
Chana Dal 1 tsp
Urad Dal ½ tsp
Curry leaves 2-3 strands
Coriander leaves 2-3 stalks
Grated coconut 3-4 tsp (optional)
Oil 3-4 tsp
Water 2 ½ cups
Salt to taste
Method :
Finely chop onion and keep aside. Wash curry and coriander leaves, finely chop and keep. Split green chillies into two halves and keep.
Keep water for boiling separately.
In a pan put oil, when it is hot put mustard seeds. When it splutters put split green chillies, cut curd chillies (curd chillies gives special taste….if it is not available add more greeen chillies) chana dal, urad dal, curry leaves.
When chana dal is golden brown add chopped onion and fry for 2-3 mins or till light golden brown.
Wash Nucchakki/Broken Rice and add to it. Do not soak.
Fry for about 3-4 mins. You can see Nucchakki/Broken Rice forms white colour when it is done.
Now add boiling water, salt to taste.
Keep in medium low flame and cook.
Often mix and close the lid half and cook.
When water in it goes down simmer the flame and cook until done.
Add chopped coriander leaves, grated coconut (optional) and mix.
Now Nucchakki/Broken Rice Upma is ready to eat.
Nucchakki/Broken Rice Upma goes well when eaten with hot tea. A very rare and special combination. It can be consumed along with pickle.
Tips :
You can add more water if you want Nucchakki/Broken Rice Upma little watery. You can adjust as per your taste. You can also avoid onion and follow the procedure.
